Canmore recognized by Google Canada

The Town of Canmore is known for its mountain town lifestyle, excellent training grounds for athletes and, most recently, as a leader for small businesses taking advantage of the World Wide Web.

On Tuesday (Oct. 16), Google Canada presented Mayor John Borrowman with one of five eTown Awards in recognition of the town’s numerous small businesses showing initiative regarding finding new customers, conducting operations and growing their business through use of the internet.

Divided into five sections across the country, Canmore was selected as the winner for the Prairies region, alongside other regional winners Moncton, N.B., Dorval, Que., Parry Sound, Ont. and Duncan, B.C. Read the full story at the Rocky Mountain Outlook.

Locals have their say in ‘big ride’

Despite a power outage, heavy traffic and a course change at the last moment, the overall impression both local residents and businesses owners delivered about the inaugural RBC GranFondo Banff event last weekend was positive.

On Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 28), organizers of the “big ride” held a public debriefing to hear feedback about the first GranFondo Canada event held solely within a national park.

Prior to the ride taking place, several environmental concerns were raised about the impact on wildlife as the planned 142-kilometre course ventured along roads typically inhabited by bears at this time of year. Read the full story at the Rocky Mountain Outlook.

Wounded soldiers to climb mountain near Everest in the fall

For wounded Canadian soldier Dave Macdonald, events over the next four months may be the proudest of his life.

Having arrived in Canmore on July 15, Macdonald is part of a 14-person team of retired and reserve Canadian Forces members participating in a training program that will eventually see them tackle the 6,189-metre summit of Island Peak near Mount Everest in Nepal.

“I wanted the opportunity to be part of this team and be able to tell my story,” Macdonald said at a press conference for the training mission held at Silvertip Golf Course last Wednesday (July 18). Read the full story at the Rocky Mountain Outlook.
